MISIWWA’S SIMPLE FORMULAS: MARSHMALLOW ROOT WATER
I once formulated a shampoo and conditioner for someone I considered family. Though our connection has faded on bad terms, that formula worked remarkably well.
The core ingredient was marshmallow root, whose mucilage provided deep slip, softness, and protection along the hair shaft.
It was one of my favorite traditional recipes, and though Marshmallow Root is not easily accessible, I think it’s worth trying out. IF you do not have access, Misiwwa has it here: Misiwwa Heritage Club’s Dried Marshmallow Root
What exactly are its ‘soothing’ properties? Well — the truth is, it’s simply a traditional recipe that hasn’t been researched to the extent I would have liked. It’s simply a trial that allows you to test if something botanical will work for you: or not.
From personal observations with multiple people (26 people in North America,); the marshmallow root have shown results within these categories;
1. Film-forming conditioning
The root contains mucilage polysaccharides (galacturonic acid, rhamnose, arabinose).
When hydrated, these polymers form a thin film on hair, decreasing friction and mechanical damage during detangling.
This explains the “slip” or silicone-like feel.
2. Moisture retention
The mucilage traps water along the hair shaft, reducing transepidermal water loss.
Best suited for dry, coarse, or chemically processed hair.
3. Scalp soothing
Demonstrated anti-inflammatory and emollient effects
Can calm mild scalp irritation or dryness, though it is not a medical treatment.
4. Improved manageability
Coating effect smooths cuticle irregularities, reducing static and frizz.
Facilitates combing and may lessen breakage over time.
5. pH and compatibility
Neutral to slightly acidic (pH 5–6) when prepared in distilled water—ideal for scalp and hair’s natural pH range.
Marshmallow root, till this day, is something that I plan to research and improve on - personally, I like the silicone-like afterfeel, and hopefully, something I can formulate into my products at a safe amount.
